The Chinese company Baidu has announced a new version of its artificial intelligence model Ernie 4.0. According to the developers, it competes with GPT-4 and other advanced AI.
Ernie, according to the head of Baidu, is not inferior to the chatbot from OpenAI in terms of complexity and general capabilities. The Chinese AI system currently has 45 million users, compared to ChatGPT’s 180 million. Baidu is counting on AI to help it surpass major local players including Alibaba and Tencent.
During the presentation, the Ernie Bot chatbot answered questions related to the real estate market in real time, solved math problems and, on command, wrote a story set in the world of ancient martial arts. In March, the platform was much weaker, and at the first presentation Baidu limited itself to video recording. In June, the company said that its neural network was comparable in general capabilities to the GPT-3.5 model, and surpassed the more advanced GPT-4.0 in certain tasks related to the Chinese language.
For now, the model is available to a limited number of users. Baidu plans to introduce artificial intelligence technologies into the search engine, maps, cloud drives, as well as business analytics for enterprise clients.
