Mexican senator from the state of Nuevo Leon Indira Kempis announced her intentions to make Bitcoin an integral part of her political program.
Kempis made headlines in 2022 when she introduced a bill to create a CBDC.
The domain’s initial response did not mention cryptocurrencies, and designated central bank Banco de México as the sole issuer of the digital peso. This, according to the senator, was done in favor of a pragmatic approach to quickly create the necessary legal framework.
However, after criticism of the introduction of CBDC from the crypto community, Kempis supplemented the bill to include Bitcoin. She is now leading negotiations to recognize the first cryptocurrency as legal tender in Mexico.
So far, the central bank has not provided an analysis of the CBDC bill, and the reaction of legislators is mixed.
Kempis also intends to promote educational programs related to cryptocurrencies and other relevant laws.
