Former Apple designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are discussing the possibility of creating a new device powered by AI, The Information reports, citing two people with knowledge of the matter.
At this point, it’s unclear what the device is or whether they’ll decide to build one, but the duo are discussing what a “new device for the AI age” might look like.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Jony Ive discussed the appearance of a consumer device based on OpenAI technologies in the designer’s studio in San Francisco. Their goal is to develop a natural and intuitive user interface for interacting with the AI platform. They hope that the device will create a revolution similar to the iPhone, whose touch interface introduced the world to the possibilities of the mobile Internet. Now the creators of the project are trying to choose a device design, considering many different ideas.
The founder and head of SoftBank, Masayoshi Son, participated in some of the meetings – he assigned a central role in the project to Arm, 90% of which his conglomerate controls, and offered financial support. Altman, Ive and Son discussed creating a company that could leverage the resources of all three co-founders, with SoftBank potentially investing more than $1 billion in the project.
